Do you still remember the feeling when it was Christmas, Eid
Al-Fitr, Chinese New Year, Hanukkah or whatever the celebration is?. For me,
those days were special. I could eat festive meals and cookies without getting worry
about gaining weights, I finally could play hide and seek with my cousins, I
could watch great holiday theme movies and sleep late. Suddenly I could do many
things I couldn’t do in usual days. I felt happy and joy. The world seems very
beautiful that day.
As we grow older, everything changes. I suppose, every people has
their own priority which sadly only a few of it includes family. Holidays are
more likely filled with casual talk about job, marriage, kids and gibberish.
Imagine this chronology happens in the same order every year, over and over
again.
Krampus is believed as the dangerous sidekick of Santa Claus. According
to the centuries-old legends, if a child misbehaved, Santa Claus, in his
omniscience, would know and send his associate, Krampus. It would visit the
home of misbehaving children to punish them. It was believed he would give
beatings, and kidnap the kids, bringing them down to his underworld lair to
live for a year (http://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends/santa-s-horned-helper-fearsome-legend-krampus-christmas-punisher-004799).
As an Irritated boy who wished for a traditional way of his family
used to celebrate Christmas, Max intentionally ripped his letter to Santa and
threw it away. Later on, Max’s family was visited by mischievous toys and Krampus
who kidnapped every family member.
I personally like how the movie parodying the cliché of a family. The
quarrel between Max and his cousins at dinner time, a chit chat between Max’s
mom and her long time no see aunt, a brother in law who like to brag about his
hobby at a family gathering are a little bit of many things that probably
happen in a other family as well. I think we need to be reminded the true value
of family. Family are those whose not only we share DNA with, but those who
will love us no matter how annoying we are, those who will still come back no
matter how broke the home is, those who we first tell our every story, those
who means everything.
I kind of miss my childhood actually. If being a little child means
you will be fearless, having empathy, enthusiastic and easy breezy then I’d
rather be a tot forever. Being an adult implies having responsibilities,
commitments, work in balance, how to stay sane and other boring junk. As if the
enjoyment of children’s realm was sucked up from our life when we grown-up. As
if having dinner with a family is nothing but torture.
Thank God the chaos caused by Krampus occurred only in Max’s
nightmare. If not, Krampus will be a gruesome horror movie with no comedy in
it.
